I recently shared a view of my messy studio.
The first scrap busting project that I started was a design for a pillow.
The first part of the project consisted of creating the actual stuffed pillow. I stuffed the pillow with the smallest scraps. This was documented in Part 1 of this projects series. Watch the first part of making “The Prickly Pillow” below.
This week I completed the project by upcycling a pair of pajama pants into a pillow cover. The front of the pillow was adorned with a large cactus constructed from scraps from the bin.
This project looked simple but no upcycle is as simple as it seems. I had to contend with the limited fabric from an already cut item of clothing.
The thing I love about upcycling is it’s like a puzzle. Sewing itself can be compared to a jigsaw puzzle but upcycling is more like trying to solve a logic puzzle. There’s additional level of problem solving involved.
I feel a sense of accomplishment completing this first project and seeing a large part of the bin emptied.
I hope you will stay tuned in to see the next project in the Scrap Busting Series.
