I saw an incredible pink coat on Pinterest at about a year ago. I don’t know who the designer is so I can’t give them the credit they deserve, but I have been obsessing over this look for a while now. Every aspect of this coat has sparked my imagination.

This week’s project was inspired by the back view of this coat. I kept thinking this would be a great way to upcycle something with fit issues across the back.
I found a jean jacket and a skirt that I thought would be a great “mash up”. The skirt was woven and had a lovely floral design that I thought would make a pretty back panel for the jean jacket. The jean jacket was roomy but had a back pleat that I wanted to eliminate. The roomy fit and the tapered hem band looked “bubbly”, for lack of a better descriptive word. The fit just didn’t look as good in person as the product photo (below).

I shared my initial idea to upcycle this jacket on the first episode of Crafting and Coffee, a video series with Rae Hodge of Rae Creating More, where we work on our projects while chatting about current affairs.
I was thinking of using a quilt to create a longer coat but as in most cases of creating art the canvas spoke to me and I went in an entirely different direction.
I recorded the process of incorporating the skirt to the back of the jacket. You can also see how I decided how to incorporate a coordinating black lace trim that I had in my stash. During the design process I also decided to remove all the bands including the collar. (Below)
I was proud of the result. I showed it to my mom who is my second biggest critic (next to myself). Before I could take product photos for the store she bought it! That’s the quickest sale I’ve ever made. I’ll have to try to make another to see if I can recreate the same magic.
