I have been working on a lot of product photography lately and I’m loving it! YardGirl Creations (YGC) has officially been selected as the creative consultant for Ribbons Cosmetics and because they are constantly churning out fresh new nail polish colors, I decided it was time for YGC to invest in equipment that would produce consistently quality photos and would cut down on photo editing. My favorite investment was the Fotodiox Pro LED Studio-in-a-Box. Which was reasonable, functional, and convenient. It folds flat when not in use which is great for my small studio/office. Great photos are guaranteed to increase your sales and they are a “must” if you intend to use a highly visual vehicle such as Instagram as your main form of marketing. They are the first impression of not only the product but the company. It doesn’t matter if the photos are studios shots or taken outdoors. They should look professional and be taken in good light. This leads me to another related topic, product descriptions, something that many small businesses, especially those with online stores, forget to focus on. A detailed description of the products being sold is essential. Something as simple as nail polish has its subtle variations. Ribbons breaks their colors into popular categories and use metadata to simplify selection on their site. But those of you with items such as apparel or other tangible products should include descriptions of the materials your items are made of and an explanation of available sizes. If products are available in different colors be sure to display photos of each color. Any small amount of ambivalence can stop a sale in its tracks. Besides small business owners don’t have time to answer the same questions over and over again. Save yourself the trouble by providing all the information consumers need to make an informed purchase.
